With the help of research for the Rocket silo, you unlock the first components for your satellite production. All you need is the science packages for automation, logistics and chemistry (red, green and blue research).

The Rocket silo research unlocks the components needed to launch your mission into space.

Production of Rocket Parts

To launch your first satellite into space, you first need the Rocket silo itself, which you can craft in your inventory. The production requires the following materials:

  • 1000 steel plates
  • 1000 concrete
  • 200 processing units
  • 200 electric motors
  • 100 pipes

In order to launch a satellite in the rocket silo, it must be continuously supplied with blue processing units, low density structures and rocket fuel via inserters. This starts the production of rocket parts in the silo.

To launch a rocket into space, you always need 50x processing units, low density structures and rocket fuel. This number can be reduced by putting red productivity modules of the highest quality in your rocket silo.

Production of Foundations for Space Platforms

You then need to create foundations for your space platform. These are important in order to be able to place buildings in space on your satellite. In this example, you can see how foundations can be built from steel plates and copper cables:

For the production of space platform foundations, copper cables are first made from copper plates.

Using these foundations, you can send your first space platform starter pack into orbit by placing this item in your rocket silo and then creating a new platform.

To build a space platform, you must first add a new space platform via the Remote View. If the item for the starter pack is in the rocket silo, it will then be automatically delivered to the new space platform.

A new platform can be created remotely. This will be built as soon as the space platform starter pack has been placed in the rocket silo.

Building Your Space Platform for Space Exploration Science Packs

In Factorio, you build your space platforms exclusively via remote view. Although you can travel to the platform to move between planets, you cannot walk around on the platform itself.

While my first version of the research ship in the early game does not require any logic items or sensors, in the mid-game I opted for a sushi belt with logic conditions on which all forms of asteroids are transported on one belt. Both variants are also possible in the early game, with the sushi belt with logic being space-saving and elegant.

Basically, the platform automatically requests items that are still needed for construction, provided that the checkbox for automatic logistics requests in the rocket silo is set. Then robots will automatically fill your silo. Logistics requests are also the only way to load rocket fuel into the rocket, because otherwise it is always an ingredient for the production of rocket parts.

Production of Science Packs for Space Research

To produce Space Science Packs, you use asteroid collectors to collect three types of asteroid chunks floating around in space:

  • Metallic asteroid chunks (more common, for iron ore)
  • Carbonic asteroid chunk (normal, for carbon)
  • Oxide asteroid chunk (less common, for ice)

These chunks are processed into the corresponding raw materials by crushers. During this process, there is always the chance that a new chunk will emerge.

The resulting iron ore must first be processed into iron plates in a furnace. Iron plates, carbon and ice can now be used together in assembly machines to produce science packs for space research.

In order to send the science packs to the base (to Nauvis), they must be stored in the main building (space platform hub) using an inserter.

On Nauvis, you must now build a cargo landing pad (made of steel plates, processing units and concrete) to receive this cargo. To do this, you create a logistics request with the white research bottles and the desired number of pieces to be stored in the cargo landing pad.

The space platform automatically supplies white research packs until 4.000 are reached.

Using inserters with the appropriate filter, you can get the desired item from your cargo landing pad and bring it to your research labs.
